FBS Spotlight: New Faculty

Alexandra “Zippy” Hood is First Baptist’s new school band, chorus, and music teacher.  She is a native of Toronto, Canada, but moved to Charleston at a young age.  Mrs. Hood arrives with 8 years music teaching experience at the primary and secondary education levels.  Mrs. Hood is a professional oboist as an active performer in the Charleston area regularly playing with Charleston Symphony members. Mrs. Hood also has a private studio, and offers instrumental lessons.

Mrs. Hood is an active member in St. Philip’s Church downtown Charleston.  She is involved in St. Philip’s music ministry teaching 1st – 3rd grade choir, as well as singing in the adult choir.   Mrs. Hood earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Oboe Performance and Music Education from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in 2010 studying under the principal oboist of the Baltimore Symphony, Katherine Needleman.   In 2015, Mrs. Hood earned a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Maryland.

Mrs. Hood is married to her wonderful husband, Billy.  They both have their tour guide licenses and periodically give carriage tours in Charleston throughout the year.  Together, they also have a small wood working business, and are a part of the night local artists in the Charleston City Market on Friday & Saturday nights.
