Fort Dorchester leads the area with five players selected to the high school football preseason All-Lowcountry team.

The unit is led by senior quarterback Dakereon Joyner, a South Carolina verbal commitment who is closing in on 10,000 career passing yards.

Senior receiver Justin Williams is among the best in the state and holds one of two receiving spots on the preseason list.  Senior offensive lineman Wakeel Rivers, senior linebacker K.J. Brown, and senior safety/running back DeAngelo Knight are the other Patriots to make the squad.

Berkeley had four players selected - three on defense.  Cane Bay, Summerville, First Baptist and Wando each had two selections.

As has been well documented throughout the spring and summer, the position of strength in the Lowcountry for the 2017 football season is at quarterback.

While Fort Dorchester senior Dakereon Joyner is the clear-cut No. 1 signal caller in the area, the list of quality quarterbacks is longer than it has ever been.

The arrival of senior Sam Hartman, a Wake Forest commit, to Oceanside Collegiate over the summer added yet another top quarterback to the Lowcounty.  Add Hartman to an impressive list that includes Cale Lewis (Wando), Leo Albano (Bishop England), Corey Fields (Baptist Hill), RJ Roderick (Cane Bay), Kam Smiley (St. Johns) and junior Johathan Bennett (Summerville).

Roderick, an option quarterback, has verbally committed to South Carolina as a defensive back but rushed for nearly 1,700 yards last season.

Fort Dorchester enters the season as the top-ranked team in the preseason ream ranking.  The Patriots have an 18-game winning streak against Lowcountry teams, last losing in November of 2014.  Berkeley is ranked second but certainly has some issues to correct, as does third-ranked Cane Bay.  Dorchester rivals Summerville and Ashley Ridge are looking to reverse fortunes after subpar seasons in 2016.
