Music at FBS

Elementary Music   General Music Classes are offered to K-4th Grade students, where students learn rhythm, basic music reading, instrument recognition, listening skills, and basic singing technique. Older elementary grades tackle specific instruments in class:  4th Grade Ukulele; 3rd Grade Recorder

Elementary Choir   Offered to interested students grades 3-6.  The Elementary Choir is a long standing tradition at First Baptist School.  Boys and Girls rehearse and perform together, but occasionally split to perform Boys' and Girls' Choir numbers.  Elementary Choir meets Friday afternoons from 1:30 - 2:30 in the music room. The choir sings throughout the year at various school and off campus events.  One of the choir's favorite things to do is sing the National Anthem for INS Naturalization Ceremonies at the nearby Federal Courthouse in Charleston.

Private Instrument/Voice Lessons  Open to students of various ages, depending upon instrument choice/ability level.  Vocal - Male and Female (Mrs. Judy Cone).  Instrumental:  Piano, Saxophone, Clarinet, Beginner Guitar, Banjo, Violin.  Piano Lessons are taught by Mrs. Judy Cone.  Violin Lessons and group classes are taught by Mrs. Mei Gawlik.  All other lessons are taught by Mr. Kyle Babb.

Upper School Music  Middle School Choir is for grades 7-8.  High School Choir is for grades 9-12.  First Baptist School's Upper School Choirs sing a variety of sacred and secular choral literature for school and community events. The Upper School Choirs also participate in competitions and clinics sponsored by the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA).  The choir was ranked as "Superior" at the 2015 SCISA Music Festival.  Choir rehearsals take place almost exclusively during school, and Choir class completes the Fine Arts graduation requirement.

Each Spring, the choir takes and overnight trip alternating annually between a Christian Mission-oriented trip on even years, and on odd years, a team-and-skill-building trip to destinations far and wide.  Past trips include:  Spring 2014 Mission Trip to Upstate South Carolina's Connie Maxwell Children's Home and Fairplay Camp School; Spring 2015 trip to Walk Disney World, Orlando, Florida attending the Disney Sings! Performance Workshop and Recording Session.  Coming in Spring 2016 the choir will take a Mission Trip to Central Georgia's Georgia Baptist Home, Georgia Methodist Home, Georgia Industrial Children's Home, and First Baptist Church of Tucker, Georgia.  Coming in 2017 the Choir will be singing aboard the Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas while on a 5-night Western Carribean Cruise to Labadee and Jamaica in January, 2017.
