A Look to the Past as We Build Our Future, Celebrating 70 Years of First Baptist School

What an exciting time to be a part of the First Baptist School family! This year we begin our 70th year of operations, and as we honor our past, we are steadily building with an eye toward our future. The education building on our Downtown campus provided an excellent home for many years, but with a new classroom building going up in its place, it will allow our school to continue providing a unique environment for our lower school families. As we were preparing to begin our construction project at our downtown campus, we discovered some fascinating materials from the early years of First Baptist School. Some of the initial rules involved “no talking or loud noises of the bus below Broad Street” and “no roughhousing in the hallway.” Those rules still ring true, but so much of our school life has changed over the last 70 years.

Over the years students have come and gone, new programs have been started and flourished, graduates have made impacts in their communities, championships won, and the arts have been celebrated. You could fill pages with all of the changes that have occurred, but there is one constant to our journey, and that is God’s word and how it has been at the heart of everything that we do here at First Baptist School. We aren’t perfect, but each day, we are staying faithful and forging ahead with the vision of Dr. John Hamrick to provide a Christian education to Charleston area families.

As we celebrate our 70th year, let us hold to Lamentations 3:23, which exclaims "They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." This year is an ideal opportunity for all of our families to celebrate what God has done at First Baptist School but also a chance to continue to build on our strong foundation. We are thankful for all of our families at First Baptist and that we can partner with you to continue to impact generations of families. Let's make this a great year!

God Bless and Go Canes!
